Gift of Reading
Christmas came early for the children of the East Kalgoorlie Primary School when the Rotary Club of Hannan’s presented each child in the school with a book.
Improving literacy world wide is a major goal for Rotary and the local club has been sharing the gift of reading with the primary school for 10 years.
“Literacy is of great importance to Rotary,” said Anne McLoughlin, president of the Rotary Club of Hannans.
“This year is our tenth year of giving books to the children in the school. Over the past decade we’ve given close to a 1,000 books and the children love receiving them.
“Our aim is to make dreams real and with our focus on world literacy it’s great to be able to give the kids these books.”
The smiles on the children’s faces said it all as they came up to receive their books from Anne.
“Our attendance numbers have been down recently,” said Donna Bridge, the principal of the East Kalgoorlie Primary School.
“I told them yesterday that Rotary would be coming today with their books and lots of kids have come today.
“They really appreciate their books. We have a lot of disadvantaged children in our school and it’s great to have this focus on literacy and getting books into homes.
“We have a valued partnership with the Rotary Club of Hannans and I’d like to thank them for their support.”
