Literacy project
Fellow Rotarians, a little while a go you may remember me mentioning an idea I had for a literacy project. The project is called Write on Time and Lisa, Nerida and myself have made a start but now we need some volunteers to help us get this baby off the ground.
Write on Time is a project aimed at young people, from kindy through to year 12. The idea is to get a young writer to record a story from an aged person’s life.
Littlies can choose to draw a picture while older kids can write a story. Ideally there will be a photo of both writer and subject submitted with the story.
Prizes will be awarded for each year level and each participant will get something for participating. Once all the entries are in and judged there will be a presentation of the work in St Barbaras Square. This day will be a day of celebration with a focus on childhood of the past.
It is hoped that St Barbara’s Square will be set up like an old fashioned backyard; the writing will be displayed on Hills Hoists, old fashioned games such as hopscotch will be set up for kids to have a go at.
The historical society, museum and Aboriginal language centre will be contacted to see if they would like to set up a display.
A booklet of all the work will be collated and will be available for sale on the day. After celebration day the work will be displayed in the foyer of the arts centre.
To make this happen we will need a fair bit of sponsorship either in the form of cold hard cash or in the donation of prizes/merchandise.
The timeline for this event follows: if you’re keen to help, sponsor or know someone else who would be please let me know. Use the contact form on this web site to send a message.
